Dog Training Questions

What Training Method do you use?

We use our own training techniques based on the natural drives of each individual dog. We don't believe any one single method works well for all dogs and its important to make adjustments as the dog develops during the learning process. Food training may be a good approach for some baby puppies, but will not produce the best long term results for most dogs. We also have to make adjustments for the owners natural abilities as well. Our training is balanced with proven results.

We have a Pit Bull, are there any breeds you won't accept?

It seems we specialize in working with those breeds others might often turn away. We accept all breeds and all problems.

Do you come to our home or do we come to you?

There are exceptions, but most often our initial training is done here at our facility. For a trainer to be able to help you they must know who your dog is. When you take your dog to a new place, we have a unique and important opportunity to see who the dog really is beneath the learned behaviors you experience. By going to your home in the dogs normal environment we can only witness who the dog has "learned" to be, in other words the problems/behaviors you will describe to us.  For a training plan to be the most effective its important for the trainer to know the hidden factors that will only be exposed in those first few moments in new surroundings.

I want to take my Puppy to a Class for socializing, do you offer puppy classes?

Our experience with dog aggression towards other animals is more often than not traced back to a bad experience at a young age with another dog. It is impossible to predict the outcome when a group of puppy's are allowed to intermingle with inexperienced owners. However we do know that puppy's will display dominant play behavior and a seemingly harmless little scrap or posturing can be harmful.  Because Socialization  occurs naturally, as you, your family, and guests interact with the puppy and as you take the puppy to other places the puppy will learn from you about how it should act in different situations .   We offer Private Puppy Consults for pups under 4 months of age.

Why don't you offer classes?

Imagine going to a class with a group of 10 dogs and inexperienced owners with the same problems you might be having or much worse. Classes are not the optimal environment to learn in, it is better to teach the dog basic concepts in a calm controlled setting. Once the skills are mastered you can always find your own distractions for advancing the dogs abilities. One on One private training is the best choice as we can focus on you, tailor the training for you and your dog.

What is the best age to begin training?

Like us, a dog is constantly learning and training can occur at any age, even older dogs can learn new tricks. The optimal time for formal training is as early as 4 months of age and we offer Puppy Consults for those under 4 months.

We just adopted a dog, when should we start training

Often we are taught to give the dog time to bond with you, yet the very first time you meet your new dog he is learning about you and how you expect him/her to act. What actions (behaviors) work and which don't work to get the dog what it wants. Teaching the dog will actually enhance and speed up the bonding process. We recommend that you begin training as quickly as possible to correctly shape your pets behavior.

My Puppy/Dog (chews, digs, whines list your problem), when will he/she grow out of it?

Believing unwanted behaviors will get better with age is a common trap. Most of these unwanted behaviors are natural and rewarding to the dog, resulting in them growing into the problem not growing out of it. The foundation of our Puppy program is teaching you how to block unwanted behaviors and shape these natural behaviors into positive actions.

Our dog is really very sweet, but sometimes can be aggressive, what can we do?

We understand just how disturbing this can be, your not alone, 80% of our consults are for aggression based issues. The good news is we have a great track record of resolving aggression issues. Once you understand the cause and apply proper management techniques aggression can be eliminated or at the very least controlled, surprisingly within one or two sessions!
